The Future of Transportation Needs Simply to Look to the Past
Can you imagine a city on Mars in 2050? I find it hard to fathom this reality for my children. They will be in their forties and if I’m lucky I will be in my 80’s shaking my head like my grandfather used to and saying “I remember when....”.
When my grandfather was a boy growing up in rural Ontario he and his siblings would walk many miles to school everyday as automobiles were a rare luxury. In the 1980’s he would constantly express amazement that almost everyone – even he - had their own car!
Last week in Texas, Elon Musk unveiled a new Starship that “will be able to carry up to 100 people to the moon, Mars or other destinations in space or around Earth”. If that wasn’t amazing enough, “going zero-carbon for space flight could be one of the key breakthroughs that enables SpaceX to achieve its ambitious goal of a city on Mars by 2050.”
Carbon neutrality is how Elon Musk envisions the future of transportation full-stop and without question it is what we all must strive for moving forward. The bubble has burst on the gas-fuelled reality my grandfather was in awe of. We now know the current car-centric culture we live in is unsustainable.
In her article, “Walkable communities need to be our future”, Antonina Malchick writes about how the automobile and suburban sprawl have pushed walking out of our lives. She states that “If we are to have a hope of building and restoring healthy communities that serve people rather than cars, much less of averting the worst effects of climate change, we have to devote ourselves to building a walkable world, and we have to start now.”
Here's what I can imagine; an urban lifestyle where you can walk out your door and comfortably run multiple errands on foot without having to deal with parking or traffic is within reach. We’ve built VOOMcart to make it easy to walk and be productive, connect with our community and improve our health.
So what are you waiting for? Push Forward with VOOMcart.
