Celebrating World Car Free Day with a Walkable Win

What if thoughtful design could inspire a happier, healthier community?

VOOMcart and Culdesac share this bold vision, challenging the deeply ingrained car-dependency that has shaped North American cities for decades. In a world where cars have long been the default for moving people and goods, innovation is key to helping us transition to a new way (yet the oldest!) of thinking about how we move and get things done. That’s why we’re thrilled to announce a groundbreaking partnership: VOOMcart is now the exclusive pedestrian cart partner at Culdesac, the first car-free neighbourhood built from the ground up in the U.S.

What is Culdesac?

Culdesac Tempe

Culdesac is not your average neighbourhood. Founded by visionary Ryan Johnson, Culdesac was designed with one radical idea in mind: what if we built a place for people, not cars? Located in Tempe, Arizona, this community ditches personal vehicles in favor of vibrant public spaces, walkable streets, and seamless transit connections. It's a modern rethink of urban design—one where people are the priority, and walking and biking is the main way to get around.

That’s where VOOMcart comes in.

Why VOOMcart?

We created VOOMcart because we saw a simple need: how do you carry 70 pounds of groceries, laundry, or anything else—without thinking you need to jump in a car to do it effortlessly? Our carts are engineered with ergonomic principles and real-life use in mind, giving you the “trunk” of a car, minus the car. It’s social, stylish, and strong. Perfect for places like Culdesac, where walking is a way of life.

“We’re thrilled to partner with VOOMcart as our exclusive pedestrian cart at Culdesac,” says Maddux, Culdesac’s Director of Marketing. “Together, we’re making it easier than ever for residents to walk to the grocery store, hop on transit, or carry home whatever they need, all while supporting a walkable lifestyle.”

Celebrating World Car Free Day

This announcement couldn’t come at a better time. World Car Free Day—celebrated every September 22—began in the early 2000s as a global movement to reflect on the role of cars in our lives and reimagine what cities could look like with less traffic and more human-powered movement.

This isn’t about waging a “war on cars.” It’s about asking: What if we didn’t have to rely on them for every trip?

The truth is, car dependency isn’t a personal choice—it’s a consequence of how our cities were built. When the Ford Model T became affordable and widely available in the 1910s and 1920s, urban planning began to shift. Streets that once prioritized people and public transit slowly gave way to highways, parking lots, and sprawling suburbs designed around the car. For many, car dependency is the default—not the dream.

But in walkable, human-centered communities, World Car Free Day is a chance to explore alternatives—like walking, biking, scootering, or, yes, VOOMcarting.

Built to Walk

At VOOMcart and Culdesac, we believe that if you build for walking, people will walk. Culdesac does it through visionary urban design. VOOMcart does it through thoughtful, ergonomic design that makes carrying things on foot easier—and way more enjoyable.

Together, we’re creating the spaces and tools that make walking not just possible, but preferable. Because once you feel the joy of moving through your day on foot; slowing down, connecting with your surroundings, it just clicks and becomes part of how you live.

Culdesac’s first car-free neighborhood in Tempe is just the start. More walkable communities are on the way. Learn more about Culdesac’s growing vision.

This World Car Free Day, we’re celebrating the small (carts) and big (neighborhoods!) shifts that make car-free living feel natural—and joyful.

Let’s walk and roll our way forward!
